Transmission always worked fine and smooth. I was driving it around this morning to a couple of places, pulling in and backing out of parking spaces no problem. Then the last time I was backing out I put it in reverse and... nothing. It was as if I was in neutral. No pop, no grind, no shake, no squeal, no shudder, no nothing. Same story in 4wd as 2wd.

All forward gears work just fine, again, smooth shifting and all that.

If you didnt know reverse wasnt working, youd swear that there was nothing wrong with the transmission. I drove it directly to my service guy (been going to him for 12 years, first name basis, balh blah blah) and left it there. He's on vacation this week and his girl behind the counter said "you know, we dont do transmissions" So I wont hear from him for 5 or 6 days if its even something he can deal with.

I understand if there was some overt thing that indicated a transmission problem, but there were no symptoms, reverse just stopped working.

Any idea on what it could be?
