Stripped out Transmission pan bolt

I've bought a used 1999 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L and I wanted to service the tranny but the bolt is stripped out beyond any help like a smaller socket, etc. Someone told me I can weld a new nut onto the stripped out one, is this safe to do why its still all hooked up to the tranny or will I burn up the fluid or anything in the tranny. I think all I'd have to do is tac weld the nut on so I cant see doing anything wrong to the tranny but thought I better ask first.

Thanks, Tim

Can you grab it with some vice grips and then just replace the bolt?

I understand your concern... The tranni oil pan bolt is steel and the tranni housing is a lighter, more mild metal. But your friends idea is doable. Use a mig welder, and do it quickly. Spot weld the new bolt to the stripped bolt quickly, then cool it rite away.
During this heating process, the stripped bolt will probably come lose too.

I cant grab it with anything its stripped out like a circle, I did some research and found that using a dremel, cut a slot into the side of it and use a chisel or screwdriver and try and hammer it loose. I think I'll try that first, if not than I'm tac welding a nut onto it.

old mechanics trick... die grind a slot in what use to be the head of the bolt and use a slotted (common) screw driver. add the use of a cresent wrench if needed for better torque.
