You can go wider, I have 8" rims and have 11.50" tire on now. but I had 12.50's on before. I don't think there is a set rule of don't go so much wider than your rim. I think if you can get the bead to set and you like the way it looks, go for it. Now for handleing I think you want to stay as close to the rime size as possible. Maybe a little wider on the tire.

I just remember the older cars that had wire wheels and offset out really far. So like a 13-14" and it would be about 6-8" wide wheel, with like 4-5" wide cheap white walls.
It looked dorky as hell, espectially when the tire sidewall was streatched out as far as they could to get mounted and set the bead.
IMO it was goofy looking!

It should look pretty good. I think you will find that it may be too tall, and have you considered changing the gear set? The 36's will definetly bog down the truck. I would definetly consider changing the gear set. Just a recommendation!
