Default towing capacity

Does anybody know the limiting factor that makes the silverado 5.3 only able to tow 8900 lbs? Is it engine, tranny, brakes, axles, etc? I know I used to tow 12k all the time with my 93' silverado with no problem, but it was also rated for less. The new Ford comercial claims "fully boxed frame", but I know that is just a sales gimmic. Also if it is engine, then the capacity should go up with improvements right?

boxed frame would be good for wheelin, but other than that its a sales thing, ive hailed 8k around the hills hereno problem with the stock 5.3l. i would bet the ford weights more so you might be able to stop quicker. chevy comes stock with load range c tires so thats probly a big factor 2,500per tire cap.my hitch says 500lbs max touge weight so a better hitch and maybe helper springs would be a good idea.

Default RE: towing capacity

I have a 99 Z-71 with the 5.3 and when I called Chevy and gave them my VIN their customer service told me my towing capacity was 10k. I added helper springs and haul a 29 foot travel trailer with no issues.
