Tranny Help
Would like to swap out the tranny in my 89 with one that has Overdrive...... Hard to do?? any tips?? or should i just scrap the idea??:confused:

You could easily throw a 700R4 under there, remind me, what do you have now?

It's not that hard, you will need a different length drive shaft. Most salvage yards have a pile of them though. Of course your dash will still only read as a 3 speed - there won't be an overdrive spot on the shifter. Where your "D" is will now be "OD".

My plans where to find a truck in the salvage yard that had a tranny with overdrive in it.... pull the tranny, linkage, and the gauge cluster in the cab... i would just have to keep the odometer some how for my state inspection/emissions requirements... :p |
Don't forget the drive shaft. You can easily swap the gear selection part of the new cluster into your cluster. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

ummm................I think you all forgot one VERY important peice of the "puzzle"........how to engauge OD.........this is almost always done by computer but.........you can rig a toggle switch to "turn on" the OD solinoid

You won't need a toggle switch. It will be on overdrive when you move the shifter to "D". This will be a 700R4 so it will go into OD without all that. I did the same swap in an older Silverado and it worked perfect.

thats right the 700r4 is a hyro shift not an electric shift.......my bad
