Default Transmission overflow out of dipstick

Just bought a 1995 Silverado 2500. I took a trip into town and back, it took roughly 15min, when I got home I noticed there was a leak. I checked the fluid on the ground and noticed it was transmission fluid. I poped the hood and noticed the transmission dipstick was wet. When I released the trans dipstick it gushed out.

When I bought the truck I drove it 3plus hours home, no leaks. Ive since have taken little 15min trips here and there also no leaks. I've talked to previous owner they assured me they did not over fill it, i'm inclined to trust her.

The fluid did not smell burnt and had a good red color still to it, it however was really thin.

I am a newb! Help me please with any information.

Check the fluid level with it cold then warm it up and check again. Let us know what you found. My guess is it was over filled.

Sounds like it was overfilled.

Personally, the easiest solution is to take it to a trans shop and have them drop the pan and do a fluid/filter change on it. They will fill it to the proper level for you and if there's a problem with the trans they'll tel you.

I'd change the fluid and filter. It's not a hard job. I did my truck yesterday.

Sorry took me a bit to come back. Pulled breather tube off trans, found a perfect drop of mud sealing the tube. Heard loud hiss once I pulled it off, ran like a champ since. Dipstick read high entire time, throwing me off but think it was due to the pressure build up, reads perfectly now that breather tube isnt blocked up.

Just an after thought, retarded design if a single drop of mud can cause such pressure and heat build up in the trans. Well guess pressure eventually would be enough to clear out of tube, right?

If you are concerned that it could happen again you can always route it up so it draws air from the air cleaner box. Common practice on off-road vehicles.

I always just hooked up a piece of rubber hose, and run it up between the cab and the bed, like they vent lines on the differentials.
