Default Two-way Radio Installation

Probably should have looked into this before buying a 2011 Silverado but....
Does anybody have experience with installing radio equipment in the Silverado? Specifically I am installing an Amateur Radio (Ham) VHF/UHF transceiver and wondering if there is anything in particular to watch out for. Power levels may be up to 55 Watts out (Figure roughly 140 W input DC). Will hook directly to the battery and double fuse the lines.

Advise on handy routing for the wires appreciated also. ( Feedline and power) Antenna placement is open for now.

Thanks in advance.

I would recommend at least 12 guage wire and 10 would be better since it will pull 10-12 amps when transmitting. Just keep the wiring away from anything thats hot or turning. Best place for an antenna is the middle of the roof. I use a magnetic mount for mine. If that's not possible just remember the best transmission will be in the direction of the most metal under the antenna.

Thanks for the input TMW. The last time I did any serious radio installation was in a 1985 Dodge Van. Didn't mind drilling holes in that beast. (Called him Max for Max Legroom.) Didn't know what a computer control system was in those day and still had something called a carburetor. Electrical compatibility was not a concern.

Grey dog;
I'm a Ham myself, but haven't got any radio stuff in 2012 Silverado yet. I am trying to figure out how to route wires for rear camera from switch in cab. I don't want to use reverse lights, and I need to run video feed any way. Did you or other forum members solve wire routing question?
I solved my own problem and found a gasket on the floor below the drivers feet. It's seen from beneath the truck. You can lift the carpetting and drill through the gasket to route wires to the back of the truck.
