'04 Ram 1500 with shuddering in steering
This is a new to me Dodge Ram 1500 5,7 hemi with low mileage. I am the 3rd owner, but do not know the history of the vehicle. It does not presently get a lot of mileage put on it, as I am retired and basically use the truck for run around errands about town. About 2 weeks back I started noticing that the steering started to get a shudder or shimmy/shake each time I made a left hand turn. I can get thee same thing if just in park and turning the steering wheel all the way left or all the way right. When driving though, it just seems to come on when I turn left and is from the driver's side of the truck. I took it to Firestone to have them check the alignment and see if they could determine the cause of this. The mechanic there did indeed feel the same thing as I had described. He also said that this was a brand new rack and pinion system in the truck, as there was virtually no dust or grease on it when he examined it. The final conclusion on it was that it either had a leak in the system that had allowed air into the system or a weak steering pump. A new rack and pinion was guestimated to run about $7-*00 bucks. They said the only real way to cure it without replacing anything was to drive it much more often. They said that would not harm anything. Me, I know zero about this stuff, so I am asking if anyone else here knows if that was a good diagnosis or not and if anything can be done on my own end to resolve the problem? There is no indication that this vehicle had ever been involved in a wreck, but I do not know the reason they put in a new system like that and I do not know the vehicle history. Appreciate any thoughts on it.
