Default Mini-Trip Computer Inputs

I have a 2006 Ram 3500 diesel short bed for pulling a smallish 5th wheel. I've been curious about just how the console mini-trip computer calculates MPG and DTE. What inputs does it use for these calcs and where do they come from? There must be some limit on how far back the input data goes--e.g last 100 miles, last 20 gallons, last 10 hours of engine running, etc.?? I'm sure the currently displayed MPG isn't averaged over an extensive range of data because the numbers go up and down too quickly for that. But just what are the facts? Maybe someone out there really knows--I'm sure we all have our guesses; but I'm looking for the stone cold truth, thanks. If anybody has an idea for a better place to get these answers, please suggest. Thanks.
