Default 1987 Ford F150 Problems

Ok so i bought a 1987 Ford F150 for a mud bogger and its not the nicest thing nor does it run good. I'm working on making it run good though. M yquestion is it wont hold an idle and it dies if yo udont keep it reved up, it used alot of gas, and its really tough to get it to start generally the battery dies before it'll start and you gotta tow it around behind another truck in 3rd gear for it to fire up. I was wondering what i should look at or try to get it to run better and be a little bit realiable.
My next question it how hard would it be to switch it over to Carbed from fuel injection its got no fancy options no power options that it does have cruise control but i have never tryed to use it so ya. But whats parts do i need to change it over to carbed and what do i need to do? Thanks
