Unhappy 05 chevy 4x4 2500 silverado transfer case

My truck started making a loud clunking noise from somewhere underneath. It sounded like the transfer case. It was only at low speeds or when I let off the accelerator. On my way home something gave out and made a horrible clunking ( not quite grinding noise). Pulled over and it wouldn't move. I tried revving it up, every gear and every position in four wheel drive. When I put it back in park it still made a noise like something was trying to engage ( very LOUD rattling or fast paced clunking). The truck has 117000 miles on it. There was no difference in power or torque before this happened. I towed with no problem with my wife's Ford Windstar. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

don't know how this works but did you figure out what was wrong with transfer case silverado? mine suddenly makes very loud metal on metal noise occasionally and seems like the front end is driving even though 4x4 not engaged

Default Transfer case

There is a pump inside the transfer case and it eventually wears a pinhole in the casing and the fluid will only leak while it is under pressure. So there won't be any puddles under your truck. There is a aftermarket spacer that can be installed and it is a harder metal than the case so it won't wear. I'm still not sure why the factory doesn't install the spacer. It cost me $1200 to get my t-case rebuilt, but I pulled it and took it in. Hopefully you caught yours in time and may not be so expensive.

Good luck,

Dustin

If you feel spacer is costly outside you can buy them online on E-Bay, which will cost you less
