Default Rear axle noise at hwy speed

I have a 1999 Tahoe 5.7 with 3.42 locking differential in the rear axle causing a slight whine at highway speeds. I have recently replaced the LH otbd axle bearing and LH axle. That got rid of some of the noise, but still detecting a whine. I would like to remove the differential gear cluster, to inspect the diff carrier bearings, but the GM maintenance manual shows a special tool to spread the housing to take the preload off the carrier bearings. Can I remove and reinstall the gear cluster (pumpkin) without this tool, as the books says there is about .008" preload on these bearings. (an interference fit) I know I can pry it out, but will I be able to get it back in without this special tool. Would appreciate anyone's experience or advice on how to get this in and out. I don't want to pull this out and find out I am in trouble without this special tool.
