Hi guys.


Just found this site. I'm considering a new 2010 Silverado extended cab 4x4 with 5.3 / 6 speed auto. My question is real world towing capacity. The trucks my dealer has available, with great deals, all have the 3.08 rear end. Although I prefer the 3.42 to tow up to 9,500lbs. (per guide), the salesman claims that chevy's tow ratings are very conservative. He claims the 3.08 will easily tow in excess of the 6,800lb rating.

I will be occasionally (3-4 times a year) towing a 27ft Boat weighing in around 6,500lbs. with tandem axle trailer. Total weight should be around 9,000lbs.

I would prefer the 3.42 but the deal I'm being offered is extremely tempting (I've done my homework). I just don't want to be sorry I didn't wait to find a truck with the 3.42 in it.

Any real like experience with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I would get the higher gear even as high as a 3.73. With that 6 speed you will be fine. It will make a huge difference in the way it tows. Your buying a new truck don't settle - get what you want so you won't have any regrets later. I tow a trailer all the time and a boat about 4 times a month during the warmer months. I have been through a few tow vehicles that I got deals on and talked myself into thinking I would be happy with. It doesn't cost the dealer any more for 3.08, 3.42, 3.73 etc so stand strong and make them sell you what you want and if they decline go to the next dealer. Good luck!

 

I agree 100% with Mr. Shamrock. If you are going to be towing something, do so comfortably.
