Unhappy 1999 Silverado Oil pressure problems and coolant mystery

Guys I have a 1999 Silverado with a 5.3 eng Vortec
over several years I have had a problem with the cooling sys, it seems like every couple of months I would have to add coolant to the motor, but could never find a leak any where. in the last year the problem has gotten worse, motor started to tick, like a hydraulic lifter tick, worse when the engine is cold, when I change my oil last time there was some kind of slush in it, pretty sure that it is water, so after reading some of the postings here I figured out the problem is iether a leaking head gasket, a cracked head or leacking water pump gasket, would like to rule out the water pump before I star on the head gaskets or even the heads themselfs, with so much slush in the sys im sure that it is iether a head gasket or a cracked head, any advise???
