New User, Unlearned Mechanic
Hi all,
My name's Jon. I'm new to the whole concept of being a mechanic, save for a very strict prevtitive maintenance routine I hold on my '00 Ford Ranger.
It's not the Ranger that I'm here about actually.
I've come into the posession of a rather abused 1991 Chevy W/T 1500. The original V6 engine in it got toasted by its previous owner. All that was left of it when I got the truck was everything under the valves, the motor is still connected to the transmission. Everything from the torque converter on down the powertrain is intact, and should be operational (previous owner had the transmission for less than 3K miles when the motor quit, and the only problem he noted with the 4WD system was the front wheels made some sort of localized grinding noise when the 4WD was engaged, which I understand could be anywhere from transfercase on foward through the CV axles).
My idea for it is to put a Chevy Small Block 350 inplace of the V6... seems to me that a truck the size of this deserved a V8 from the get-go and with the V6 in it is probably where the design went awry... Any how, I have recenlty heard that I might have to actually get a whole different transmission for it... anyone have insight into that? If so, I'd like to hear more about transmissions and what would be a good fit for the motor I'm getting for it... and pretty much everything powertrain related.
Look forward to posting and reading and learning... after all, what better way to learn about mechanic work than to take a lifeless truck and make it run again?
Take care,
Jon
