Default Qwik Valve Review

As a moderator here I have been chosen to do a review on the Fumoto qwik valve oil drain valve. This product replaces your drain bolt in your oil pan and has a valve built in which enables you to simply turn a lever 90 degrees to drain you oil. There is also a nipple available that you can connect a hose to in order to drain your oil into a container. As a DIY kind of guy I can appreciate this device. I usually do my own oil changes and can remember more than one occasion where at least a few drop ended up on the driveway. Plus not having to unscrew the drain bolt putting less wear and tear on the threads is a plus.

For the record, I am in no way affiliated with these guys. I was randomly chosen by them as a moderator here to review this product.

Here is what arrived the other day...

The 2ND picture is an adapter in case your drain plug is recessed and won't be easily reached with just the valve screwed in.

I am not due to change my oil, but will be installing this during the next change keeping a close eye on it and recording what I find here. Of course my main concern is - Will it leak? I am nervous to install something that is not familiar to me on my truck, but I figure if I keep an eye on it I should be OK. My 2ND concern is how well it will drain - being a smaller hole how much extra time will it take to get all the oil out.

First impression:

Upon removing it from the box it appears to be a decent made valve. I do imagine I will need the adapter installed since the lever will be right at the base of the threads which will make it tough to get to it when it is in the closed position. I am somewhat concerned that I will now have 2 sealing surfaces (adapter to pan and valve to adapter) AND I will have a 2 1/2" valve sticking out of my pan which I guess could possible be contacted and therefore damaged = leakage! I guess when I get it installed I can evaluate better how open it is to be contacted. One thing they did think of there is the nipple that can be connected to a drain hose is plastic and snaps on to the brass fitting so it could possible be released without damaging the valve itself if it was hit by something.

I also wonder if any dirt or sludge gets trapped in the ball part of the valve how well it will seal, but they claim with the double seal it is virtually leak free. I guess we will see.

Stay tuned...
