Default Door storage area gets wet when door is opened during rain

The storage area built into my doors on my 2007 GMC Sierra Classic extended cab gets wet when I must open the door or doors when it is raining, and this gets all the stuff in the storage area wet. This is very inconvenient. Why in the world didn't the inventor add a cover to these storage areas??!! I realize then, that anything in the storage area (maps, papers, flashlight, etc.) could not stick out above the top of the storage area, but at least it would keep the area dry. Only the top of the cover would get wet. I am asking for suggestions to this problem. I could not find any aftermarket "cover" that could be attached. I hate to keep removing stuff from the storage area before opening the door when it is raining, but this is what I have to do. Even then, of course, the empty storage area gets wet. I suppose covering it with a plastic bag would be an answer. (Still inconvenient). I cannot be alone in thinking about this problem. I cannot believe some company has not invented something for this problem. Please advise. Thank you.
