Default Repairs getting overwhelming - Is it worth it?

My son, a college kid drives a Silverado 2500HD 2008 ~200000 miles. It was running great and then one day started making an awful noise. The dealership talked us into fixing it because they said it is in great shape and to replace it would be a ton more. Now we are having problem after problem. After each fix, everything was fine for a few days and then the service engine light would come back on and another problem.
Questions:
A) Do these issues have to do with each other or just really bad luck?
B) Should we have fixed each item or were we just dumb?
C) Is there a cheaper way to deal with the latest issues?
D) Please if you have any guidance it would be great. I am a mom that knows very little and my son has no experience dealing with any of this.
Waving the white flag!

1) (Awful Grinding noise when driving - The truck shook when driven) The Rear differential was leaking fluid. When they looked at it we were told it had rusted all the way through and needed to be replaced. Also, the U-Bolts needed to be replaced. $4500

2) (Loud screeching noise and the truck sputtered when trying to start) The belt in the engine was loose because of a spring that kept the tension correct Because the belt was loose it put a hold in a hose. $1000

3) Now the engine light went on AGAIN and when he put gas in it made the same loud screeching noise like in 2. He went to get the code read and here is what we know. We are waiting for them to call me once they get to look at it.
CODES:
B3779 - Air Flow control dual-zone circuit high voltage/Open 0X05
C0110 - Pump Motor Circuit Short to Battery 0X01
C0110 - Pump Motor Circuit Short to Battery 0X02
P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1 0X00
P 0442 - EVAP System Leak Detected (Small Leak) 0X00
P0573 - Brake Switch "A" Circuit High 0X00
P0724 - Brake Switch "A" Circuit High 0X00
