Had this happen on a 96 Blazer that was handed down to me, but took 13 years for it to happen. Sounds like beans in a tin can. Either the cat shot its rusted innards into the muffler or the muffler rusted? I noticed on my 2010 they collect a lot of water. Had a weld go on the muffler and it left a puddle of water underneath it.
