89 4x4 speedometer problem

In the process of restoring a 89 silverado 4x4. The speedometer works sometimes and sometimes not. Any info on this would be much appreciated. Thanks

Replaced the speed sensor. No change. "Check Engine" light comes on too sporadically when the speedo don't work.
