I just picked up a 92 silverado ex cab with a 305 with almost 150k and some very misplaced caddy wheels. I needed a work truck, this one had ac and i've always liked the body styling so it was a done deal. Anyway I'm going thru the drive thru to get my whopper jr and dr.p, and it died when I went to reverse it to get around the corner. It's a reeealy narrow drive thru. This is at noon and there are 4 cars behind me now. The drive thru lady and one of the cooks along with some random dude and the guy behind me pushed this beast to the window to get my food and then to a stall because once the engine stops running, it will not start again for a few minutes.

The motor turns over no problem, I tried jumping it with no luck. It is strange, just wait a few minutes and it will fire right up. The only thing that is different from a cold start is the starter makes that spinning noise because I keep it engaged for it to get going(at least I think that is the case).

It also died while waiting at a long intersection. Was more or less idling for 5 minutes with the ac and stereo going, put the blinker on a minute before my light was due and the engine died. Definitely added 10 minutes to some peoples commute times. But yeah same deal, wait a few minutes and it was good to go.

Anyone have some experience with this?

Not sure if this is related but it has a small coolant leak possibly from the water pump. The temp gauge doesn't show any overheating.

 

I have seen a fuel pump cause this when it is getting weak. You need to fix that coolant leak though.

 

Yeah put a fuel pressure gauge on it and let it idle for a while to see if the psi drops any when it dies.

 

sounds like a control module issue.....getting hot shutting down the engine then once it cools for a few its good to go....either that or you got one massive electrical problem

 

could be your starter is going out.

Just for clarification, if I drive it 1 mile and shut it off I will be waiting to start again. However if I start it up cold, then immediately shut it off, it will start up, but not as easy. The previous owner pulled some wiring away from the block, I will try and peel some tape off it this weekend.

 

The best thing to do is narrow it down to see whether it is ignition or fuel. Otherwise its a guessing game.
