Default 96 C3500 454 2WD auto w/OD 106k, Trans issues

At first I thought this was a fuel issue, my wife drives the truck most of the time and the description of what was happening sounded like fuel issues.

Trans makes weird noise and bogs down has to shift gears to get up to speed is what she described. All of that sounded like a clogged fuel filter, so I replaced it 3 times.

The first time we also had the pan dropped and a new filter added. There were allot of shavings in the bottom of the pan.

The problem reoccurred so the truck sat all winter!

About a month or so ago I replaced the filter and drove into town to pick up hay. About a 60 trip, no problems.

The next week wife drives and said it bogged down 1 time on the way home, so I R&Rd the fuel filter again.

The following week I drove to town, made one stop and when I got back on the street at about 35-40 mph it sounded like someone was dragging a chain through the transmission.

Shifted from OD to 3rd and no other noise or problems for another 40 miles!

When I got home and described what I heard her reply was “that’s what I said I heard” so here I am.

Is a new/rebuilt trans on order here? Which trans should I be looking for?

Thanks
Neil

Yeah that is a familiar sound. My truck did it and the trans went out within about 100 miles of me first hearing the noise. A 96 3500 should have a 4L80E transmission. Mine was a 4L60E but from what your describing it sounds like the same deal. $1200 later I was back on the road. Mine occured at 120,000 miles so I guess it's not bad to get over 100K out of a transmission. Good Luck!

Im pretty sure there is a difference. 96 started with OBDII. Different computer set up than later models so that may be the case.
