Default 98 Silverado Transmission Problem

[&:] Evening folks,

I have a 98 Silverado 4X4, 5.7L that actually has been a gem for quite a few years. The truck now has 198,000mi on it and has been running great up until now. I have done some towing with a 20' bass boat for quite some time now, but have never had any problems at all.

Well today returning from work doing about 50mph, the trany made some screeching type nosie a few times and started acting funny. Pulled over and checked trany fluid..OK So I continued on home...freeway...well the trany would not go into overdrive and when I stopped again at a station then it would not go into reverse.

I thought I would see if you fellas might have some ideas or quick checks that I can do. All in all, I have a feeling that it is going to be expensive, but maybe, just maybe it might be something simple...especially sense there were no symptoms.

Thanks for any information you can lend.

Mike

I believe it mightbe the sun gear shell (i think thats what they call it). My brother had a 99 silverado and it did the same thing and he took it to the tranny shop and they said that the shell had broken and took some more stuff with it. Had to have trans rebuilt

Well AlThrotle,

You were right!! Did not even have to go to much into the story with the shop and he knew right what it was. (They have seen these just a few times...)The sun shell had given out which takes a few other things with it so its rebuild time. Not bad though for 190,00mi....!

Not a bad deal either...these guys are well known and come highly recommened by a lot of shops, and they get the job done right the first time.

The quote came out between $1,300 and $1500 tops. He'll be replacing the shell with a beast shell and new updated valve assembly. HD bands, new converter...etc (18 month warranty, unlimited miles.) It should be better than what Chevy put in the truck.

I'll let you know how everything turns out.
Thanks again for the info.

Mike
