When I decided to do all kinds of mods to my 91 454, I went with a crane cam. On jegs they usually say the rpm range of the cams so you can kinda figure what would be good for you depending on what range you want. I did notice after the cam, headers, exhaust, pulleys, blah, blah, blah that it ran like a bat outta hell. But that lasted about a month till I started having problems. I didn't have enough back pressure and all types of other problems began to occur. Therefore, I say get an exhaust that makes it sound somewhat lopey. I just haven't had much luck with performance mods. They never work well for me on daily drivers. But that's just me.

I am also on www.ls1trucks.com. There is alot of people on there with advice on cams. Hope this helps. How can you have problems with mods on a daily driver? Too much at one time?

I'm not sure why I had so many problems. It seemed like the upgrades (which were done all at the same time) opened a gateway for any weaknesses to be attacked. On a 91, things didn't do so well with upgrades, but these newer vehicles might be nicer to mods. I usually don't try messing with something on a vehicle that is controlled to so much of an extent by a computer, as these newer vehicles are. Maybe when you get that Nelson pcm flash, everything will work together. Oh and sorry for the confusion on the 91 454. I really wanted a 454 SS but the closest I could get to it was a dually with a 454. So I made it my own 454SS. It was a quick **** when it was running right. Plus the dual wheels allowed it to hook up a lot better that those single wheeled trucks.

crane cams is out of biz. apparantly.

on the smaller 4.8, I'd look at a slightly smaller cam, maybe in the 210/216 112 range. Try to keep some of your low end because that motor needs all it can get.

You can also run some LS6 yellow springs for about $55, then pick up some hardened chromo 7.4 (oe size) pushrods and a basic cam swap gasket kit.
Check out Thunder Racing, or Scoggins Dickey (sp?), they both have good product selection and prices/service.

But, along with the cam swap, I'd HIGHLY recommend a higher stall torque converter. The stock engine needs it, and with any cam larger than OE you're probably going to have a higher powerband, needing that torque converter to be able to wind up the rpms better without bogging and lagging off the line.

I think gmfullsizedotcom and performancetrucksdotcom really has good depth of knowledge too. I'm not yet a member of the ls1truck forum...

After doing research and what other owners have recomended for the 4.8,im goin with the Z06 stock cam out of a vette with the yellow valve springs.also a 3000 stall.but i do have one question alot of guys have a 3000 stall, just wondering if a 2800 will work well.My dad is a certified tranny man for 32+ years and hes got a new one that was shipped wrong that the dealer keeped.well i can get it for almost nothin but just wonderin if its going to work.also going to rebuild the tranny while its out, only about 95$ to do so(Pays off havin tranny man in the family)heavy duty clutches and shift kit.
