It is because when the truck is in 4-wheel the whole drivetrain is locked together and when you turn the front wheels the drivetrain is trying to spin all 4 wheels the same speed.The inner front wheel is trying to go the same speed as the other 3 but has less distance to travel,this causes it to spin when you turn and the popping noise you hear is the tread "biting" on the surface of the road.This is common on all 4x4 vehicles when making turns in 4x4 and is super bad on vehicles with lockers.I would try not to use 4x4 on the pavement if you don't have to but if you do atleast make wide turns so the drivetrain isn't in such a bind..
