Default Awful clunk...rearend? transmission?

I have a 2000 Silverado 1/2 ton. I was driving today when I heard a clunk that seemed to come from the rearend while the truck shuttered and shook. It continued to repeatedly make this loud bank noise and the truck shook. While in park it's fine. When in reverse or drive and not not moving it sounds like something is turning. When I put it in park to get out it rolls forward on it's own and makes a noise near the rear drivers side wheel. What could this be??? It is nearly undriveable.

I really don't think that is it. Thank you though. I do not believe that the truck would continue to roll forward on an incline when in park and shut off and continue to slowly make the clunk noise.

well it could be he rear end or it could be the park "pin" in the tranny.........the shuddering though makes me think its the tranny........pull the cover on the diff and verify that it is either "good" or "bad"

The noise is deffinitley coming from the left/driver's side rear wheel. Can an axle strip out or break right there at the wheel? Is it a common problem? Also when in drive/reverse while my foot is on the brake the drive shaft will turn without the truck moving...

sounds like you stripped out the ring or pinion....breaking an axle shaft is possible but unless you have massive amounts of power you probably just stripped the rear end.........pull the cover and I think you will find your answer

I agree with Chris it has to be something in the rear end. YUCK! That is not common especially on such a new truck. Do you have alot of miles?

The rain has finally stopped and we've finally been able to take a look at it...destroyed spider gears and stripped out the axle. Apparently it should have taken lots of torque to tear this up but I can assure you that I have driven this truck very nicely. I guess things just happen. I wanted to let everyone know the final diagnosis. Thank you for the help.
