Default Cam change

I have a question about how hard is it to install a aftermarket cam in a 5.3 engine...How long will it take? What all do I have to change out?

your going to probly need to pull your engine. remove old cam. install new cam w/ assembly lube. replace timing belt. Hope to god you didnt break anything..

You dont have to pull the motor just the grill and radiator. Here is a good write up on it. This is in a LS1 but the 5.3 is a LS based motor so its pretty much the same thing. Click

What year is your truck?

Why would he have to pull the engine?? lol

You should replace the springs, retainers, and pushrods. You will also need a new crank bolt ($10 or so at the dealer).

The whole thing takes a few hours.

its not exactly a bolt on mod lol... i'd guess the timing chain/belt whatever we have has to go, like rxsteven said the grille/radiator is going to have to go to get the shaft in and out... might want to look into new lifters just to be safe

I live outside of Dallas.

The timing chain will be fine and the lifters will be fine, but you can replace it if you want while you're in there. The cam can be done in an hour or less if you've done it a few times. The time consuming part is the springs.
