72 Charger: When you get an Intake you feel it more (the MAF mod). Mine will actually chirp tires alot off of idle. Your right tho, you prob only get 1 or 2 hp but I love the "off-idle" response.

I was really worried about doing this mod at first ...I envisioned sensors all over the place. When I finally broke down and took it apart and looked at it, I laughed. I just used the end of my screw driver and pushed until one edge was out ...then flipped it over and pulled it all the way out.

No error codes. If the village idiot (me) can do it ...anyone can.

I also so gains off idle ..but then again, I did most of my mods within 1-2 weeks, so I could be confused.

thanks for all the input. seems like an excellent way to gain power for nothing but labor. not even sure why GM put that screen there. Thanks again

Liability reasons, some numbnut could think it was cool to run it without a filter, one piece of debris (like a leaf) hits those wires on the sensor and that engine could die. Sensor would be useless after that and they would put the filter back in and start pointing fingers at GM.

I think it was more for stabilazation of the air so that the air would be more reliable for the sensor. Mainly just to get better readings. I took mine out. But the other reason (the leaf thing) would also be beleavable.

unless I'm mistaken, the screen is behind the sensor ...if so, how would that even out the airflow.

<edit> Nevermind, I was just thinking about how I was holding the MAF. ...duh!

It stabilizes the air running past the sensor too but to me that is some overpriced engineer trying to, well, over-engineer the MAF sensor.

swissed cheesed the air box and descreened the MAF. Excellent idle response. is it just me or does the gas pedal actually feel lighter? thanks for all the help guys. just crossing my fingers for a few days that no light comes on.
P.S. goes to show everyone has a red neck side.

I had a well educated technician at the VW dealership explain the maf screen to me one day. I asked him if it was supposed to be a secondary filter of some kind and he laughed at me. He said that's what everyone thinks but it's actually like gpet said, it's got something to do with stabalizing the airflow. I don't remember exactly how he explained it to me cause this particular guy is a car science nut and talk only in big educated engineering terms but it's supposed to make the air flow across the maf sensor in a way to make it get a precise reading. .......but I haven't noticed any problems so far! LOL!!
