Default electric fan conversion

I know you can buy kits with fan controllers but they are fairly expensive. I can get a fan pretty cheap but was wondering about reliably and automatically controlling it. Does the computer in my truck have an unused output for an electric radiator fan? Anybody have input on when you've done such a conversion?

thanks, jamie

Yes there is an unused port in the PCM that can be programmed to control fans.

I just looked at the websiteand it's not a programmer - it just gives you engine info and pulls/clears codes. It doesn't actually do any programming with the PCM

You need to have someone with tuning software like HP Tuners go in and activate Pin 42 (I don't think it's changed on the OBS trucks). You can buy (or make) a harness that will hook up to LS1 fans and the programmer can have them kick on at whatever temperature you want.

I'm originally getting the scangauge for info monitoring purposes (like mpg, ect, tps, obd2 codes etc) but I saw that it can[*]
Make and store up to 10 rewritable special codes
to send to the vehicle computer
[*]Didn't know exactly what that meant and that's why I asked if it could program that port. Just a thought.[*][*]

Thanks for the info help
