Default Electrical...Help

OK I have a 91 chevy 1500 with a 4.3 in it. And lately I have been have problems when i put my truck into reverse. Now when I put the truck in reverse and let the trans back me up I'm fine, but if I'm in reverse and I step on the gas I lose all power to my truck and I end up having to replace my positive battery cable running to my starter. Any ideas of what could be causing this problem??
