front wheel hub
 

have a 2007-1500 silverado-wt, rear whl drive.
i would like to know if the front hubs are serviceable, like to take them apart an re-pack the front wheel bearings. i have removed an replaced caliper brackets an hub mounting bolts"RUSTY". there doesnt seem to be any parts like bearings or seals available, only the hubs which cost around $160.00 to replace. thanks in advance.

If bearings and seals aren't available at your local parts stote, then it's possible they've gone to a sealed hub setup. The advantage of sealed is less maintenance is required until there's an actual issue requiring it to be replaced.

Back to the old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The hub on my 98 4x4 is sealed, so I would imagine yours is as well

i just have one more ?. in the past when we could actually fix things, AKA, preventive maintainance,is to me very important, i know then that the usual mileage to re-pack wheel bearings was around 50,000 miles. so my ? is does anyone have a guess on the life span of these goofy wheel hubs that you cant service. i'm nervous about them failing on the road, cause its not the same process as changing a tire, an just running out an spending over $300, just for parts, labor not included when not needed is not my preverence. personally i think that the goofy nit-wits that design these pieces should be forced to also fix them, i think then we would have a whole new process. thanks again for your help.

Really it's not as bad as you make it out to be. The bearings on my van lasted over 100K miles. That's pretty darn good if you ask me! For your truck, it's easier to replace the bearing than was on my van. Here is the procedure:

Torque the hub and brake bracket bolts to 133ftlbs

You'll only need to replace or service this bearing if 1) the bearing has vertical play in it (You can shake the wheel and hub up and down by grabbing the top and bottom of the tire), or 2) it starts making lots of noise. Otherwise, there is no maintenance to these bearings. They will last a very long time.

my hub bearings are stock and they have been on there for 215xxx miles

thanks alot guys. that 100,000 an 215,000 mile caper is a relief to hear. i think i can forget about this hub bearing issue an get back to normal. my problem is that i,m a preventive maintainance freak an i really got nervous. as i said before i removed both hubs," quite tedious" cause the mounting bolts an hub were rusted, finally got them off an cleaned up an rust proofed, also i have check the wheels for play an they are tight so i can forget this, reason i brought this up was my truck has 44,500 miles on it an i thought it would be due. thanks again!!!!

as i was a mechanic in the military we did that regularly on vehicals it stuck with me

Well I am currently a mechanic, and I am a strong believer and practice preventative maintenance because that's the way I was raised and taught by my grandfather and parents.

I can understand the anxiety about the wheel bearings if you're unfamiliar with them, but if you ask me, the engineers did us all a favor by making them a sealed unit.
