Greetings all, I have a 97 3500 with the 7.4 . This is a nice truck but.......
I have named it the fuel pump eater. I am getting ready to replace the fuel pump for the 4th time in 35000 miles. It is really annoying. My question is what could possibly be causing something like this to happen? The tank has been removed each time , flushed, and the pump replaced with a GM unit. I now consider this an undependable truck which should be gotten rid of. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. By the way the truck only has 105k on it.

 

Go with a after market one not sure witch is the best 72charger will be able to help you more he has had some problems. Did you have a warranty with those fuel pumps? I'd be mad as hell and want something for free or something. you might want to check how much power is going to the unit and see if its keeping the right pressure before the regulator. Also see if it has the right size fuse.

 

Thanks for the reply, everything on this end of the truck is stock, I did replace the fuel relay after the second pump and the pressure stays right where it is supposed to be. I have considered putting an aftermarket pump on it but I really didn't want to chop the fuel lines, you know, once you start cutting usually things just get messed up.

 

Just put a direct replacement fuel pump on it that is not a GM part, basically go down to Kragens or Napa and ask for the in tank fuel pump and they will most likely give you a few choices on brands of fuel pumps. Basically choose the one that you think will last the longest, most likely the one with a lifetime guarantee. Good luck with the new pump. You should be able to hear the pump humm or hiss, I know that the 1/2 ton does. Make sure to also check the return line for it being plugged up. Always replace the fuel filter when you change the pump too!

 

the problem is most likely the sender...follow the gray wire up from your pump...it comes to a connector on the sender...unplug that and look for burnt spots...its losing contact i think and not allowing voltage to the pump

 

LOL.. Im currently on my 10th pump and mine is a 98 ck1500..

Trucks lowered so its easy to remove the 8 bolts & get my neighbors help with a 6 pack of beer

(still not sure why it keeps going out tho)

 

you have a wiring issue probably an intermitant ground loss that "spikes" the pump and kills it..........also remember to clean the tank out and change the fuel filter and sock

 

Any certain areas you would recommend to look? Id rather not completely remove everything around the wires as the run around the truck.

 

I would start at the pump.....did you replace just the pump or the whole assembly?
Check for ground with a dvom and shake the harness while checking
