Default Gear Shift Indicator

2003 Silverado 2500 6.0 4L80e auto trans.

The electronic gear indicator shows 2nd gear an nothing I have found will make it change and so the truck will not crank. The battery is good and I unhooked it to reset the computer but the indicator still says 2. Any ideas?

When you try to change gears do you feel it actually moving from gear to gear? I had an old body style and the shift cable broke with it in Drive so there it stayed and would not crank. I had to replace the cable and it was all good again.

I read the same problem on another forum and the person said they used a performance programmer to reload the computer chip and he never had the problem again. Luckily I do have one of these so I used it to clear the error codes (didn't write them down) and everything is normal again. I'm going to keep the programmer in the truck in case this happens again and I'll make sure to jot down the codes next time as well.
