I just bought a 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 with the 6.0 gas motor. The vin # says its a 1500 HD, but anyway i just want to know what things i can do to improve my mpgs cause i drive pretty far from home and school. I already drive like a grand pa now lol. If someone could help me out by telling me what works and what doesnt so i dont go blowing money on something that wont work

 

Assuming there is nothing wrong with your truck and that you have VERY limited funds to put into your truck to improve it's mpg.
You can improve your mpg simply with your driving habits.
Drive your truck like you have a full glass of water on your dash.
Fill your tire preasures to the max allowed written on the side of the tire.

 

That is how i have been driving it since i got it. Say money isnt a issue what things can i do? I do know tht i am buying a Gready chip. Can an intake and exhaust help

 

I have never compared many of the big TUNE companies. ie: BANKS, Bully Dog and all the others.
But I have learned, Leave your truck stock and use any of the economy tunes to turn your truck down.

 

Well, for me personally, since I have got my '96 truck with 184K miles on it, the MPG at first was around 12. I improved it to around 15 just running Seafoam in the gastank, changing the oils (front diff, rear diff, transfer case, engine oil) and fixing my tires leaks and maintaining proper tire inflation. Also, keep the petal off of the floor. My 305 is a dog, but seriously, just don't hotrod it and you'll get way better MPGs. I think I also replaced my air filter at the same time as the other oils I changed out ... So there's that.

Make sure your truck doesn't need a tuneup or anything, because wasted spark can definitely effect your MPGs. When it gets warmer out, I plan on doing my intake gasket, fuel filter, cleaning the throttlebody and removing the air restrictor thing, and cleaning/replacing my MAF. I'm assuming these things will also help my MPGs.

 

1500HD did not get good fuel economy when new. They are basically a light duty 3/4ton truck with 1/2 badges.

Things that can help,
-keep ride height as low as possible
-tall and narrow tires for low rolling resistance
-tonneau cover
-full synthetic drive line fluids
-spark plugs and filters in good condition

Cheap cold air intake systems can hurt mileage.
Banks is pricey but, IMO, they do more R&D than most other companies.

 

Buy a Diesel Cruze.
Seriously if you have to drive THAT far that often a 6.0L powered truck isn't a good choice.
