i was looking at one today actually, under the hood of my buddy's 97 z... could be an air silencer... im not sure though

 

It is an air silencer/ void air box. take it off and block it with the top of a spray paint can. the part is totally uselessyou will notice an extremely small power gain and theexhaust + intake will sound a little louder.
