Its the protocol of your computer system...gm went obd2 in 96 across the board.
Gm is mostly LAN nowdays.

Gmlan...lan area network...its how gm's computers "talk"..its very high speed compared to ob2

its in voltages...highs and lows....0-7 volts

In computer terms, that would mean direct communications between nodes (sensors in this case). That would be pretty sweet considering that calcualtions could be made muck quicker to make adjustments to air/fuel mixtures and timing. I wonder if it "learns" your driving habits quicker.
