this is old mail, dates back to the repair, just now taking
photos ... after struggling almost an hour to keep the
screwdriver on the distributor drive shaft, i made this
mod and was on to the next re-assembly step in minutes.

btw the way, thank you every one for all the help and
encouragement with this project ... coolant level has
been rock solid (3+ months and counting) for first time
since i bought the truck (new) in 1999.

That's kind of what messed my truck up, I guess.

Oil pump had moved, like you said, I simply put the distrib. close as possible, limped it to the locla shop, and got them to adjust the timing.

Odd thing being, does the oil pump being "off" mess up the pump any? Because my oil pressure went from 30 at idle, and 45-60 while driving, ot 45 initially, then slowly backing off, to the point it's 10 PSI at idle, and 25 or so while driving @ 2K RPM's.

Would that make the oil pump mess up so much?

By the time you figured all them calculations, I would had that pan dropped and the pump put in. Dont think too hard friend. Old school is sometimes the best way.

Coolant level continues to be rock solid for the past 5 years. It was definitely worth the struggle to replace the lower manifold intake gaskets.

By the way, I see the photos have disappeared for some reason. The screwdriver mod that I made was simple. I cut a 3" length of thin plastic tube whose ID was slightly larger than the shaft. I forget what I actually use, maybe the retail tube from the retail packaging of some heli-coils. Anyway, IIRC, I built out the shank of the screwdriver to match the ID by wrapping ducktape around the shank, then slipped the tupe onto the shank/ducktape and secured it such that the tube extended past the end of the screwdriver blade by 1/4" or so. The mod worked by keeping the screwdriver centered on the shaft.
