I cant find my book. I have a 99 z71 with 5.3 engine. My engine oil change light came on 2 days ago. Any idea what service engine soon light might mean? Can local autozone check it or is this a dealer item?

Service engine soon is the same as a "Check engine" light. Your engine is throwing some kind of trouble code. Yes, an Auto Zone or Advance Auto parts will usually scan for codes for free. Pep Boy's won't, they want you to schedule an appointment and spend $100 for their diagnostic service.FYI, the scanner you will use at Auto Zonemay not be as specific as what the chevy dealer would use,depending on the problem. If you get a code for catalytic deterioration, you need a new cat (simple). If you get an evaporative emissions code, it might be your gas cap, or a whole list of other things in the system (not so simple). Good luck.

 

Auto Zone said its O2 Sensor, said I could try cleaning it. I guess I have to get my chiltons book out.

 

an o2 sensor code could also mean a faulty cat, just to warn you

 

Print out says HO2S heater condition Heated oxygen sensor Bank 1 Sensor 1.
