stalls, no power
A couple more notes
1) before the fix, sitting in the cab with doors/windos closed, i could hear the old pump run for a couple seconds when the ignition was first turned on.
2) the F/PMP relay unit is identical to 3 other relays (Horn, A/C, DLR) in the fuse/relay box. All four relays are the orignals, still plugged in from the factory assembly. However, all four are plugged in incorrectly. Each relay is a symmetric four pin module that can be plugged in correctly, or rotated 180 degrees. The diagram on the lid to the electrical box shows the "correct" pin alignment via numbering. According to the diagram, all four were installed 180 degrees out. Maybe the diagram is wrong? After the fix, I reinstalled the F/PMP relay the way it was originally, for better or worse.

thanks rmck490 and ruffneck, the feedback/encouragement was really helpful to keep my spirit up. how much time? total span was 4 hours, from walking out the door with my tool box to washing my hands. that included a trip to parts store to pickup the pump assembly. i didn't do any troubleshooting (ex fuel pressure test) since i have been wanting to replace the pump assembly due to a whacky fuel guage, but i did futz with the electrical box, substituting the Horn relay module into the F/PMP position (see post above). it is a simple task, nearly a one person job (except for lift the bed up and back), which could condense to an hour with the right tools, my neighbor deserves real credit he has great tools, and has replaced these before by the tank-drop procedure.
