thump in drive line
Just a clarification for those who don't know. A TSB can be issued to:
Assist in explaining the proper function of a component.
Enhance a diagnostic procedure with additional diagnostic information.
Request dealership personel to call a specific Technical Assistance phone number when a certain owner complaint is incountered.
Change a listed specification.
Advise of production changes.
Notify dealership personel of new parts, DEXRON VI, TOP TIER FUEL, FUEL SYSTEM TREATMENT PLUS, etc.
There are other reasons for a TSB but I think you get the idea, well most everyone will get it.
A RECALL or Campaign Bulletin is issued when:
A series of vehicles was mis-built and a modification needs to be made.
A condition exists where vehicle damage or personal injury may result.
A vehicle may fail an emission regulation and needs to be modified.
Other reasons can cause a recall but the examples I gave should give you an idea of the purpose for a recall, well that is almost everyone.
IN EVERY CASE OF A RECALL, owners of record will receive a notification in the mail of the recall so the issue can be corrected ASAP. Also, GM Dealers can enter your VIN and advise if a campaign needs to be done on your vehicle.
I will say it again, to my knowledge, there is no RECALL on your "thump in driveline" complaint.
I will not be intimidated by someone who represents himself as someone he isn't and is only half informed on issues and seeks to promote himself as an expert.
You decide who you want to put faith in.

so, in summary is there a way to get this problem fixed w/o having to pay for it. I think its obvious that the truck has a design flaw. I just bought a 2001 chevy 1500 Z71 with only 20,000. Of course I didnt' realize the problem till after I signed handed of the cash (private seller). Now that we realize the problem, "WHAT IS THE REAL WAY TO FIX THIS BEFORE I LOSE A TRANNY OR REAR END" Do i just replace the yoke, shorten the drive line, new tranny output shaft? Please clarify

Anyone who has as much education as you seem or think you have should not have to use the filthy language that you use to get your point across. I do not appreciate that type of language, period. You do not impress anyone with your verbage.

nice makoltd ... Exactly how I feel after **every** timeI deal with Chevy ... I don't mind consumable, wearable, age-able parts needing replacing ... What pisses me off is when brake lines fail, frames rot, etc...in under 100K or when consumable/wearables/replaceables are engineered in such a way as to prevent the backyard mechanic from fixing it themselves ... case in point are the cables holding up the tailgate ... WTF?! ... when these pastic coated steel cables break (and they will) why do you have to buy a whole unit to replace them?! ... have any of you tried to change out the spark plugs on a '97 S-10?! ... replace the wiper motor control board (why TF does this "wear out" - its solid state?!??!!) ... I want to buy american, bought american, and am now paying the price ... thanks Lutz/UAW... nice one
From what I understand, Ford is bearable with recalls, Dodge.....pft, forget it and Toyota, well IF you even have an issue they take care of it no questions asked, so technically you get what you pay for, you know, 3 to 6 thousand dollars more than domestic.
If you have a dealership that you work with, or go to often enough it helps. They USUALLY work with you if the expect you to come back.

Ok I need your guy's opinions. My truck clunks when shifting into reverse. It also would vibrate very slightly when laying off the gas pedal at highways speeds usually around 65-70 mph. I took apart the driveline, replaced a U-joint (which went in a little tight but it went in), Grease the hell out of the u-joints (both have fittings) and threw a glob of grease in the slip yoke and put the driveshaft back in. Topped off the diff and called it a day. Now the problems are still there, but they are "deadened" enough to make it more comfortable to drive. CLunk is quieter and the vibration is hardly noticable. BUT, chances are they will both be back eventually. If you were me, would you take it to the dealer and b*tch? Would you replace it with an aftermarket shaft, or just take it apart every now and then and grease it?
jsmith27 your problem is the slip yoke. When you brake hard or fast it leaves the slip yoke in a bind and when you lift up on the brake pedal just a little it releases that pressure and that is the thump or lurch you are feeling. It has been a GM problem for over 20 years. I had a 89 and a 93 and now a 07 and they all have done it. The have all been the short wb so I don't know if the longer wheel bases are affected. The dealer can stuff it with some grease and it will help for a while but it is not a fix. They did change the material of the slip yoke sometime ago and my 07 is not as bad as the earlier models but the problem still exists.
