Default Trans Temperature

A friend of mine has a 2500 Silverado and decided to install one of those gauge overlays. Well the dummy didn't take note of where the needles were facing and has asked my help. What is the best way to find out the trans temp. I used a very non scientific way and pulled the dip stick and hit it with an IR temp gun and set it accordingly. Is there a more precise way to get the exact temperature?
We got the tach, speedo, voltage, and gas gauge done and put the oil pressure gauge where he knew it used to idle at, but the trans temp was the only one we weren't sure about.

You can get read the trans temp from the PCM with a scanning tool like a Tech II or Snap-on. Not sure if you have access to one of these or not. Other than that, I don't know of a more precise way of knowing what the trans temperature is.
