Default Transparent Trailer Camera Harness / Cable Alternative Routing

The Chevy/GMC Transparent Trailer Camera comes with instructions that tell you to route the harness / cable on the outside of the trailer. I, along with many others, didn't like the looks of that. The cable end that connects to the truck has 3 prongs on it that would require about a 1 1/2" hole to thread it through. Some have looked at disassembling that connector. DON'T try that. Instead, disassemble the camera bracket and then unplug the camera. That leaves you with a small cable you can thread through by drilling only 5/8" diameter holes.

Here is the camera off the bracket. These are 8mm bolts, but I grabbed a 5/16 wrench, which is the same size.

Next take apart the camera case using a T10 Torx driver. When reassembling use some removable Loctite.

Once you separate the case, you can see the camera and connector. Remove the camera with connector from the case. You will gently lift the tab to disengage the connector. I used a small flathead screwdriver. Rock back and forth.

Here is the cable disconnected from the camera. Now all you need is a 5/8" hole to run the cable. Reassemble in reverse order.

I installed this on a wide motorcycle trailer. When you go to set up the Transparent Trailer, you will enter trailer dimensions. It shows you taking the measurement from outside of wheel to outside of wheel. My actual measurement is 9', or 108". The system told me I was outside of allowed dimensions for the Transparent Trailer to work. I kept playing with it until I found it would accept 102" max.

I found it calibrated correctly with those dimensions, and gave me a good Transparent Trailer image.

I like the set up, but almost every time I stop and turn the truck off, the system needs to recalibrate to get the Transparent Trailer image back up and working. Since that takes ~2 to 4 miles at under 30 miles and hour, that can be a problem on highways and other major roads. On narrow roads I find it most useful to show the image that cuts out the trailer and shows the sides/trailer wheels.

Hope this is useful. Cheers!
