Weak tailgate cables
I just purchased a 2000 Sierra, and got on the GM website to check for historical info about this truck, and found a recall notice about the cables on the tailgates, it said if you sit on the tailgate the cables could break and you could bust your ***! (just kidding). It did warn not to sit on the tailgate until they replace the cables. I purchased the truck to carry my 4 wheeler, I intended to set the ramp on the lowered tailgate, and drive the 4wheeler onto the tailgate and into the bed. Am I wrong to do this, even with strong cables, should I always remove the tailgate, and set the ramp on the truck bed? All the other rednecks around here just drive across the tailgate.
I would get the cables replaced. Mine broke when I was loading a Emark walk behind mower. After you have them replaced I wouldn't worry about loading the 4 wheeler I drive my Rancher across the tailgate and have not had a problem.
I own a 2002 1500HD and I had the cables replaced as well. You shouldn't have a problem loading a 4 wheeler on the tailgate. My wife is...rather...large and she sits on the tailgate and the cables haven't broke...yet. You should be fine. Happy truckin!
yeh i went in to get my replaced and they said i had the wrong ones so they would replace them. Then my buddy has a 99 silverado to and he went in but to a different dealership and got them replaced. But i have had my truck since November and i have loaded my 2001 Yamaha Raptor 660R pretty much every weekend since and the cables themselves havent broke, but the bolt on my tailgate that holds the cable to it fell out one day and i havent had a bolt in there since and i am still loading up my quad and nothing yet but planning on replace them again
I'm getting mine replaced today. I saw a home video of 2 guys and 2 girls sitting on a tailgate when the cables broke. It dumped them on the ground. But now I can't find it or I would post the web address here.
