Default Engine suddenly very loud with slight knock

Driving home over the weekend, my 96 Ram suddenly got really loud, and started a minor knock. It sounds like engine noise, not exhaust or other usual suspects. The sound itself does not sound like something with a good outcome...

However, I drove home towing a a heavy horse trailer with horses, and did not lose oil pressure or power.

Any thoughts on where to start?

Those year trucks were real bad about the intermediate shaft getting noisy. That’s the starring coupling under the hood that connects the steering to the gear box. It has to telescope in and out to accommodate the movement of the body to frame movements. If it gets loose, it will rattle. Check with you’re dealer to see if it still has a recall.

Because of low oil pressure lifters, valve lash adjusters, variable valve train adjuster makes loud noise. kindly check all these things to solve problem

if its a cumins turbo deisel there is a dowel pin in the block behind the timing cover that likes to fall out and get slapped around by the timing set and can possibly get jammed in the gears..just a suggestion if you find nothing else to be wrong..did your exhaust fall off ??
