Default Todays brakes often require special tools

Most brake tools are available at Sears and other tool outlets. All the big parts store also have a variety of brake tools. If in doubt, go to a brake shop and ask any questions. Frank

Like Frank says, You need a brake spring tool.
I've done it with a pair of vise grips and a large flat screw driver as a pry bar.

I've done it with just a pair of channel locks before, but it is a pain.
