Default 2005 SD (V-10) will not start

New guy here (will introduce later) with a problem.

On the way to work the other day, my 2005 SD flashed the "check gauges" message, and died a mile from home. Tried to restart (it has stalled before), and got a loud single "click." It has a new battery, still, just one loud click.

I had it towed home. After work, I checked all connections, cleaned everything, but still just a big click. I changed the starter, and charged the battery (figured it might be low after trying to crank it). It will now crank over, and act like it wants to start, but nothing.

The only code is for the coolant temp sensor. Seems to me this would not prevent it from starting. The fuel pump primes just fine.

I have been told that maybe I soaked the plugs, which may be part of the problem. My concern is not only it starting, but why it quit to begin with. It is also a quart low on oil, upon doing some basic checking.

Could a faulty sensor tell the truck not to start?

Other ideas?

I do not want to throw money at this if I can help it.

A sensor can prevent a vehicle from starting... Honda does it. But a sensor shouldn't unexpectedly kill your engine.
