Hello

I have a 1997 Sonoma 4 cylinder with a 4L60E. A few weeks back I noticed tranny fluid in the driveway, the source was a bad pan gasket. I checked the fluid level, but I noticed it was foaming up too much to get a reading. I changed the pan gasket and filter, and refilled the trans with the proper amount of fluid. When I went to check it again, it was still very foamy.

I took it out for a drive, and it shifts fine, however, it wont downshift into first gear. No matter how hard I accelerate, it wont kick down. I had to make a couple stops along the way, and each time I shut the truck down, and restarted it, it would go into first. But after driving a mile or so, no first gear. I tried it again while coasting at about 20mph, shut the truck down, put it in neutral and restarted it. It would go into first gear fine at that point.

I don't know much about transmissions, but I assume the foamy fluid if causing the malfunction. I am not sure what shutting it down has to do with it shifting into gear. Anyone seem this, or have any advice?

 

are you sure its not overfull?..that will cause your foam

 

I don't think it is overfilled. I made sure to get the right amount back in it after I pulled the pan. It was hard to check though, because as soon as I started it, it foamed up.

 

something wenmt wrong if it did not do this before...i';d take the pan off and look at the filter...make sure it has a seal...and not 2 seals holding it in...it may be sucking air at that seal...o-ring cut or something
