OK so Iget inmy truck start it and try to back up and it wont move! Pull forward a little, try to back up it moves just a little then..bang its locked up. I assume its the rear end? Its a 1990 1500 4x4 with 178k miles . I have a parts truck that I got for the plow and it did the same thing.Only that thing would never back up. We used a tractor to drag it in the woods. My 90 hasnt done it for a while but I dont drive it every day. Do I need a new ring/pinion???? or is it something worn in there like the "rachet" stuff... Im no rear end guy. (only women)

If I drop the cover can I see or check for wear or loose stuff? (not women)

sounds more transfer case-ish than rear end...jack it up and remove the driveshaft and try turning the tires

 

Problem is it hasnt done it for a while. But I would like to find out what it is before I get stuck or realy break something...

 

if your loosing reverse only its either a transfer case or tranny prob.

 

Well Im not loosing it, it Locks up solid! If I pull ahead and back up again its ok.

Now my parts truck is an auto andmy driver is manual and they both do it. My driver had the tranny rebuilt 20kmiles ago.

I suppose it could be transfer case?

But why only reverse???
