Engine light came on. Still under warranty. Instead of taking it to the dealer and get charged I was thinking about buying a scanner. Can you recommend one?

Having a scanner is a good idea whether or not you take it in to the dealer. Knowing the codes before showing up at the dealership is just part of doing your homework.
One thing I've noticed is that the scanners are getting better and cheaper. You can get one now that will read both the engine codes and the ABS codes and pay less for it than I paid two years ago for two separate testers. (Both Actron units-CP9175 & CP9449) Check on Amazon.

with the scanners getting cheaper and better as said in the above post i would get one also one thing i have noticed is that the codes if any that are found are generic obd2 codes not dealer specific codes so i would go with one that is specific to gm so as when you take it to a dealer and explain the code they wont look at you like your crazy
as i had that done at a ford dealership
my 05 thru the 02 sensors code on my buddys matco scanner
i took it to the dealership and said the specific code it read and told them it was the 02 sensor they said that specific code could be a number of things but it wasnt so have a code book with the scanner with the scanner

If it's still IN warranty? Why would you get charged?
Having a good Code reader is a good idea, but if it's still in warranty, I would let them change all the parts they want to as long as it doesn't cost me a dime.
