Default 4wd not working - Transfer case?

2005 1500hd w/ 63,000 km. Warranty was 60,000 and the 4wd took a dump at 63 ...Rats.
Anyhoo, put it in 4wd, the light goes on but no 4wd.
I watched the driveshaft and the driveshaft front driveshaft is not turning when in 4wd. The driveshaft will turn when the truck is moving (this leads me to believe the front axle is engaged) but when the back tires spin and the truck doesn't move, the driveshaft isn't turning.
Anyone have any ideas on this?
thanks

The front drive shaft will spin if the front tires are moving. There is nothing to disconnect the front axles from the shaft. Your problem is in the electronics or the transfercase, though which I do not know.

most likely..an encoder motor on the case maybe...but its gonna have to checked for codes...could be the switch even..or front actuator

When I laid beside it and it was moving in 2wd the front d/s did not turn. In 4wd the d/s turned when moving but when stuck, with the back tires spinning the front d/s was not turning.
It is going in tomorrow to get scanned at the stealership. I'm sure it will be the encoder motor although I am disappointed that this has happened with only 63,000 km on the clock.

thanks for the replies
Kevin

Well, got the results from the scan... the encoder and the switch are working. Tech says the clutch packs are worn out and the transfer case needs a rebuild. This is nuts, 63,000 km and its finished. This thing has been through 2 winters ... thats it. I called GM warranty and they may do something for me but man, this shouldn't happen w/ this kind of mileage. I'm pissed!
Just a rant

How hard have you run it? I would be suprised if it was worn out that quick. Does it make any noises? Sounds like it is just not enguageing the front gear, maybe a loose connection? I would try to get it scanned again somewhere else is nothing obviously loose. DOesn' tsound like the switch by the way since the front is enguaging.

Doesn't get run hard at all... 4wd is mostly used for our snow and ice (two winters on it now). It pulls a two horse trailer 10 miles or so once a week. When you say engaging the front gear, do you mean the front axle or the transfer case. It was over $100.00 to have it scanned. I've called gm customer care and am waiting for a reply from them regarding the warranty. We have had alot of troubles w/ this truck... water pump, steering shaft, rear driveshaft, electrical gremlins (in the shop more than 10 hrs). Dash readout is still wonky... how can I tell if it was built on a monday?????
I've been a jeep guy for more than 20 years. This is the first gm (Wife wanted it). With more than 400,000km on a jeep transfer case and 250,000 on another I wonder why the gm is gone in 63,000.
